The Web is one place where it actually may be a good idea to be paranoid, because "they" may really be watching you. Many people surf around unaware that they might be leaving a trail of information about themselves scattered across the Net.
Every time you visit a site, it's possible that you're leaving a trail of personal data. When you surf the Web, send E-mail or post to newsgroups, be sure to protect your privacy.
The free services and freeware programs listed below will help you keep your privacy while online and offline. Please send us E-mail if you're aware of any such free services that we haven't listed below.

JBoot - This handy free utility will secure your PC's contents against unwanted prying eyes while you're away. Think of it as a MasterLock for your computer. It's only 52 kilobytes in size. (Requires Windows 95/98.)
RPK InvisiMail - This is a free standards-based E-mail security add-in for POP3/SMTP Internet E-mail software and Internet gateway servers. With RPK InvisiMail you can easily and transparently send and receive E-mail messages securely over the Internet and have "complete trust" in your Internet communications. RPK InvisiMail acts as a proxy, or system service through which all E-mail traffic passes, and it automatically encrypts or decrypts each message. RPK has worldwide strong encryption, so it is not subject to U.S. government regulation. 1.69 megabytes. (For Windows 95/98).
Norton Secret Stuff - Here's an excellent free utility for protecting the privacy of files you send over the Net. Norton Secret Stuff secures the privacy of the files you send through E-mail. It allows you to create self-decrypting executables that you can send to anyone without them needing a copy of Secret Stuff to decrypt the file. All you need to do is send the file and tell the intended recipient the password. When they run the executable they�ll be prompted for the password and the file will decrypt itself. (For Windows 95/98/NT) 160 kilobytes.
Anonymizer - A very useful site that lets you surf without leaving a trail of personal information about yourself across the Web. This service offers unlimited free trial access. Anonymizer also offer a free anonymous E-mail service. Anonymizer is offered in English, French, Italian, Portuguese & Spanish.
Interfree Anonymizer - This service lets you surf the Web anonymously. It works by loading the document identified by the URL you have specified. Because the document is loaded by the Interfree Anonymizer's server, the site that holds the document will not be able to determine any information about you. You may "test" this service free of charge.
Kill Docs - Are you worried about prying eyes taking a peek at the contents of your "Documents Menu"? This freeware utility sits in your Windows system tray (by the clock) and clears your Documents Menu when double clicked, or at preset timed intervals. Here's a screen shot. 10 kilobytes. (For Windows 95/98/NT).
Crypto Kong - This free program will allow you to easily encrypt your communications. It's simpler and easier to use than any competing digital signature and encryption product, because there is no need for certificate management. With Kong, you do not need to worry about public key certificates and you do not need to create and publish your public key certificate, or obtain other people's certificates so that you can communicate with them privately, unlike other digital signature and encryption programs. (For Win 95/98/NT only.)
CodedDrag - This program encrypts your personal data using strong encryption algorithms like Triple DES and Blowfish. Just drag & drop your files, using this program's simple interface to encrypt your files. You can download and use a free version that will be valid until Jan. 15, 1999. (For Windows 95/98/NT).
Win95 AnonyMail - (Direct download: 71 kilobytes) This is a free Windows 95 anonymous E-mailer program. It's pretty simple to use, just fill in the blanks
and press the send button. (Note: we've had visitors report that AnonyMail doesn't work with Windows 98).
Lucent Personalized Web Assistant - The LPWA helps you easily create and use consistent unique personal identities at Web sites that provide personalized services. These identities allow you to register at Web sites while keeping your true identity private. LPWA creates these unique identities on demand. This free service is available as a technology demonstration only; use at your own risk (and read the disclaimer at the bottom of the site's welcome page).
Protecting Your Privacy free brochure - This site is offering a brochure on privacy issues, including information on using protecting your passwords as well as information on Web cookies and E-mail privacy issues.
Eudora Lite with PGP - If you need privacy when sending your E-mail, here's a good free solution: Eudora Light (an excellent
freeware E-mail client) is now bundled with "Pretty Good Privacy for Personal Privacy," the strongest encryption program commercially available for individual users. Because of the current U.S. export restrictions on encryption software, you must verify that you are a citizen of (and currently residing in) the U.S. or Canada before you can download the software. Available for both PCs and Macs. Note: non-U.S. visitors can get a version of this program here.
Pretty Good Privacy freeware version - The de-facto global standard for e-mail and file privacy. Available for Macintosh, DOS, and Unix platforms.
Private Idaho - A free Internet privacy utility for Windows. It simplifies using E-mail with Pretty Good Privacy (see above listing), anonymous remailers, and nym servers, providing you with more electronic privacy. Note: this program is no longer being updated. The last official release was in Jan. 1997.
PGPfone - PGPfone (Pretty Good Privacy Phone) is a software package that turns your desktop or notebook computer into a secure telephone. It uses speech compression and strong cryptography protocols to give you the ability to have a real-time secure telephone conversation via a modem-to-modem connection. (Available only for citizens of the U.S. and Canada).
Encrypt - (Direct download: 16 kilobytes) With Encrypt you can scramble text files so no one can read them with the password (e.g. to send them as the attachment of an E-mail message). Requires Visual Basic 5 runtimes, which you can get here. Encrypt's home page is here.
Cookie Cruncher - A helpful freeware Internet cookie tool. The latest version works with AOL, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Netscape Navigator. It gives you the power to select which cookies to keep or delete at boot-up. You can also view the content of the cookies and edit Explorer and AOL cookies.
The Replay Remailer - A Dutch-based anonymous remailer. Spamming is discouraged. They also operate an Web-based remailer with SSL enabled, and for those who don't have an SSL capable browser, or a browser that doesn't accept self-signed certificates, they operate a Web-based remailer without SSL enabled.
